THE SECRET LIFE OF A FEMALE MARINE: EP. 7

There is so many unique veteran-centric non-profits that exist: you just have to find them.

One of the most unique that I have yet to come across involves a little tiny buddy that is critical to our ecosystem. The honeybee.

I had the opportunity to speak with Chuck, an incredible individual that started this organization to support both veterans and first responders.

What is Honeybees for Heroes? Honeybees for Heroes is a newly established non-profit that is supporting the Veteran and First Responder community in and around Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Per their website: “Beekeeping is an opportunity for Veterans and First Responders to get involved in a hobby that is rewarding in many ways. Beekeeping provides purpose with skills that stay with you for a lifetime. Beekeeping is an important aspect in helping save our honeybee population, together people and honeybees can help each other.”

Are they specific to the Pennsylvania area? Honeybees for Heroes is, and here is why: beekeepin’ ain’t easy. In addition to receiving a starter kit, you will also receive mentorship from experienced beekeepers. Given the complexity of this hobby, you’ll want somebody nearby that can help check the health of the hive and provide recommendations.

That being said, there are other programs available in different states. Below are some resources:

  • Michigan: https://www.canr.msu.edu/veterans/veterans-programming/Heroes-to-Hives/index
  • West Virginia: https://manukahoneyusa.com/beekeeping-therapy-veterans-ptsd/
